Welcome!

Welcome to the Lady Warriors website, online home of the Westwood Girls Lacrosse team.

The Westwood Girls Lacrosse team fields both Varsity and Junior Varsity teams. Lacrosse is not a University Interscholastic League sport in Texas. As a result, lacrosse is designated as a club sport and is not supported by the school district. Instead, we rely on fund-raisers and parental/guardian involvement and dues. The club is governed by a board of officers who are elected annually.

New Coaching Team for 2009

I'd like to share some good news with you. We're going to add TWO more coaches to our staff this year. In addition to our fearless coach Becca and conditioning coach Thomas, I'd like to welcome Christy VanDerwerken and Kenny Pailes to the coaching staff.

Christy VanDerwerken moved to Austin last year after coaching at the college level and high school. She played high school lacrosse in California and then in college at BYU where she was named to the WDIA All-American team as a midfielder in 2006. While at BYU, she coached a local high school team and then after graduating BYU, she became the head coach for BYU, leading them to 5th place in the 2007 WDIA tournament.

For the past three years, Kenny Pailes has served as the Defensive Coordinator and Goalie Coach of Westwood's Boy's Divisions 1 & 2 Varsity and Junior Varsity squads. After lettering in lacrosse at Westwood from 1991-1994, Coach Kenny Pailes took the lessons he learned as a goalie to an entirely different playing field: public safety. He spent over a decade as a fulltime firefighter, EMT-I, and hazardous materials specialist. During that time, Coach Pailes continued to play post-collegiate men's lacrosse as a member of travel and tournament teams. Coach Pailes believes that everyone that plays lacrosse as a Warrior should play to win in a positive manner. Winning is the goal, but players must have fun and grow as young men and women to get there.

By defeating St. Andrews Episcopal on their home turf, a field which St. Andrews is rumored to have never lost on, the Lady Warrior Varsity advanced to the State Championships in Houston.

Warrior Junior Varsity Undefeated

The Junior Varsity team went undefeated in the 2007-2008 season and took 2nd place in the Central Division Tournament (there are no State playoffs at the JV level).

Participation

The Westwood Womens Lacrosse team follows the same rules of conduct as UIL sports. All lacrosse players adhere to the "no pass-no play" rule and follow a code of conduct. Our school club sponsor, Sharon Cassady, if any players have failed (a grade lower than a 70) in the six week grading cycle.

Upon receiving a failing grade notification the player shall participate in practices, but may not participate in games. Participating in games includes riding on team busses and being on the team sideline during games. Exception: If a player receives a grade lower than a 70 but higher than a 59 in a weighted (AP, IB or dual-credit) class, the player may participate in practices and games with a written permission from the parents.

After a failing grade is reported, a player is not eligible to participate in games until one of the following three reinstatement requirements are met:
  1. Player provides a note(s) from the teacher(s) in the class(es) that the player has the failing grade(s), stating that the player is currently maintaining a passing grade. This letter must be also signed by the parent.
  2. Player provides a three week progress report that does not include the class they failed or a letter from the parents stating that no progress report was received. NOTE: If a progress report includes a class that was not failed in the previous 6 week report card, the player is still eligible for practices and games.
  3. Player provides the subsequent 6 week report card showing passing grades in all classes.
